日本には「飛んで火に入る夏の虫」ということわざがあるほか、シェイクスピアの戯曲「ヴェニスの商人」やヒンドゥー教の叙事詩「バガヴァッド・ギーター」といった古典の中でも詩人たちが語ってきたように、虫たちが火や明かりに引き寄せられることは昔からよく知られてきました。それにもかかわらず、その理由はこれまではっきりとは分かっていませんでしたが、ハイスピードカメラによる観察でついに解明につながる大きなヒントが示されました。
