There is nothing wrong with the way Japan played this.
If you're leading a game late, you don't push forward looking for an insurance goal. Japan was "leading" Senegal, so the impetus is on Senegal to score, and on Japan to defend.
It just so happens that they weren't playing against each other and Poland had no motivation to attack.

People might forget because of the farcical end of the game against Poland, but ultimately Japan deserved this. Beating Colombia and getting two equaliser against a good Senegal team is admirable for this team.

Well played Japan. If they had bombed forward and lost another goal they would have been out and everyone would be calling them stupid. Don't get a participation award.

If Japan would've kept attacking and conceded again, you'd all laugh and meme all day at how dumb they were. This place is so stupid sometimes.

I’m going to play devils advocate here. I don’t blame Japan at all for what they did. They decided to play defensive football to seal the round of 16.
The manager could have chosen to push forward and risk everything however the less risky option is to defend. Poland could have pressed to win the ball of course but they are going to take the free win. It wasn’t pretty, but that’s just how it goes.
