Back in the day when rock & roll first began to emerge in the post-war America, people in the music industry had a much different mindset when it came to copyright laws. Even before the '50s' R&R boom, recording covers of existing songs was standard practice for jazz and blues musicians, quite possibly because many blues songs were either inspired by, or were direct reinterpretation of existing songs whose authors were often unknown or disputed.
This trend also became popular with the early rock & roll artists of the '50s, who frequently made covers of existing blues or RnB songs. In addition, songs were also being written for general use - that is, any artist willing to pay a moderate authorship fee was free to cover the song - and some performers (usually encouraged by contracting labels) even "borrowed" songs from other performers.
As a result, a significant number of old-school rock & roll songs we love weren't written by their most iconic performers - it just so happened that their version ended up being the most popular. In this article, we'll be taking a look at some of the most famous examples of such rock & roll 'standards' - songs that were popular to cover during the nascent era of rock & roll.
